Temple etiquette for visitors: quiet cameras, incense flow, and donation tact

By Chen Park · Published 2026-03-18 · China Travel Today Editorial Desk

Active temples are places of worship first and photography sets second. Dress to cover shoulders and knees; step over thresholds if locals do; do not pose with statues as if they are theme park props. If incense is offered, watch how others light and extinguish—copy spacing and bow depth respectfully.

Donations are voluntary; scams happen when unofficial “monks” demand cash outside gates. Official ticket windows issue receipts; wandering solicitors rarely do.
